Richard Gere Antonio Banderas Gypsy Musical Malaga

Hollywood star Richard Gere attended a performance of Antonio Banderas‘ musical Gypsy at the Soho Theatre in Malaga on Thursday, January 9, 2025. The actor, accompanied by his Spanish wife Alejandra Silva, praised the production and congratulated the cast, particularly lead actress Marta Ribera, for their performances.

Gere, who has been living in Madrid since 2024, expressed his admiration for the show despite not fully understanding the Spanish dialogue. “Although I don’t understand everything, I loved the show,” Gere said, according to sources. He also commended Banderas for his commitment to the CaixaBank Soho Theatre, describing it as “beautiful.”

The visit highlighted the long-standing friendship between Gere and Banderas. The two actors have shared a close bond for years, with Gere humorously recalling how Banderas once sold a photograph of them to the paparazzi to fund a trip to Los Angeles. “It was the first time he came to Los Angeles, so the credit for his international career is entirely mine,” Gere joked during a recent event.

Gypsy, directed by Banderas, has been a resounding success in Malaga, with all performances sold out. The production, featuring a cast of 30 actors and 26 musicians from the Larios Pop Orchestra, is set to move to Madrid’s Apolo Theatre on February 7, 2025. The musical, with a script by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, marks the first time the classic show has been performed in Spain.

Gere’s presence at the Malaga performance underscores his growing ties to Spain. The actor, who won a Golden Globe and received an Honorary Oscar in 2002, has embraced life in Madrid with his family. “For me, coming to Spain is a great adventure,” Gere said in a recent interview. “I think it’s also very interesting for my children. Alejandra was very generous to give me six years living in my world, so I think it’s only fair that I give her at least another six years living in hers.”
