Riot Games Unveils Riftbound: A League of Legends Trading Card Game for 2025

LOS ANGELES, California — Riot Games has officially named its upcoming trading card game Riftbound, previously known as Project K. The game, set in the expansive universe of League of Legends and Arcane, is scheduled for release in China during the summer of 2025, followed by launches in several English-speaking countries on October 25, 2025.
Riftbound will feature over 300 cards in its inaugural set titled ‘Origins’. Players can engage in matches ranging from one-on-one to two-on-two or even free-for-all formats. The game introduces powerful champion cards that can serve as the backbone of player-created decks. Among the playable champions are Viktor, Jinx, Lee Sin, Annie, Garen, Lux, Master Yi, Volibear, and Yasuo, amongst others.
Riot’s Game Director Dave Guskin and Executive Producer Chengran Chai discussed the game’s development in a recent announcement. They confirmed that player feedback from earlier playtests significantly influenced the game’s design, leading to enhancements in card artwork and overall user experience.
“We are dedicated to making Riftbound a game that both new players and seasoned TCG fans can enjoy,” Guskin said. “We took our time to ensure that the art and gameplay meet the community’s expectations.”
Players can choose to start their journey with a boxed set named Riftbound: Proving Grounds, which will include a variety of pre-constructed decks, or opt for 14-card booster packs to expand their collections. Partnerships with established distributors like UVS Games will ensure Riftbound is widely available in local game stores.
Riot previously introduced the game under the Project K label in December 2024, but the company received mixed feedback related to monetization strategies concerning Legends of Runeterra, its digital card game. Some players expressed concerns about the player experience and revenue generation, prompting Riot to rethink its approach to its physical TCG.
Riot’s collaboration with UVS Games, a company with over 17 years of experience in the TCG market, aims to facilitate a strong launch and ongoing support for Riftbound. Events featuring live demonstrations and gameplay are planned throughout 2025.
As excitement builds for Riftbound, fans of League of Legends and trading card games are eager to see how this new venture will enrich the gaming landscape. Riot Games has promised ongoing updates via social media channels as the launch dates approach.
