LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “Two Sisters for a King,” a historical drama featuring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Eric Bana, premieres on Prime Video March 1, 2025. Directed by Justin Chadwick and adapted from Philippa Gregory’s novel, the film explores the fierce rivalry between Anne and Mary Boleyn as they vie for the affection of King Henry VIII.

The narrative unfolds during a tumultuous period in English history, marked by political intrigue and the struggle for power. The story begins when whispers circulate that Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon may be coming to an end due to her failure to produce a male heir. Sir Thomas Boleyn, played by a currently undisclosed actor, sees an opportunity for ambition by thrusting his eldest daughter, Anne, into the royal spotlight.

However, plans go awry when the king falls for Anne’s more demure sister, Mary. This complex relationship sets the stage for a tale rich in emotional tension, as both sisters maneuver through a treacherous court filled with manipulation and ambition.

Portman portrays Anne Boleyn, characterized as a relentless figure willing to use any means to advance her position at court. Johansson plays the more reserved Mary, whose charm initially draws the king’s attention. Bana steps into the role of Henry VIII, whose decisions profoundly impact the lives of both sisters.

The film has been compared to popular historical dramas such as “Elizabeth,” featuring Cate Blanchett, and “The Duchess,” starring Keira Knightley. It promises an engrossing experience for fans of courtly intrigue while also emphasizing the harsh realities faced by women during this era.

“Our film captures the dynamic between rivalry and sisterhood, set against the backdrop of one of history’s most captivating royal courts,” Portman said during a press conference. “It’s about personal ambitions, love, and the sacrifices made for power.” Johansson added, “I believe audiences will relate to the emotional struggles faced by the sisters, as their bond is tested in unimaginable ways.”

Critics have noted that while the film takes creative liberties with historical events, it offers a visually stunning depiction of the Tudor court, enhanced by meticulous set designs and period-accurate costumes. Some viewers, however, may find the deviations from historical fact disappointing.

“Two Sisters for a King” aims to attract those who enjoy stories of deceit and power plays, which remain prevalent themes in modern storytelling. The film is set to explore how historical narratives are often shaped by personal motivations and public actions.

With its engaging storyline and star-studded cast, the film is expected to generate significant buzz ahead of its release. As a poignant retelling of one of England’s most infamous sibling rivalries, “Two Sisters for a King” stands poised to be a noteworthy addition to the genre.
