Rivian Unveils Dune-Inspired Electric SUVs and Trucks

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Rivian Automotive, Inc. revealed its limited-edition R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV on Wednesday, showcasing models influenced by California‘s desert dunes. The California Dune Edition models are available now, starting at $101,700 for the R1T and $107,700 for the R1S, both including the mandatory $1,800 destination charge.

The new California Dune edition is exclusively offered on Tri-motor versions, which feature a desert-inspired Desert Storm color palette complemented by darkened badging from the Darkout Package. “This edition is designed to enhance the off-road experience while offering a distinct aesthetic,” Rivian spokesperson Lisa Calhoun said.

The California Dune Edition includes a unique two-tone interior of Sandstone and Black Mountain, along with new, easy-to-clean flooring material. The All-Terrain Package is standard, providing reinforced underbody shielding and 20-inch wheels that can be painted in either the same California Dune color or a dark finish.

Equipped with a Tri-motor powertrain, these models deliver an impressive 850 horsepower and 1,103 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, according to Rivian. The company noted that while these special editions can only be purchased with the Tri-motor option, they also offer alternative configurations with two and four motors.

Rivian’s decision to produce limited numbers of the California Dune Editions adds an element of exclusivity, although specific production caps were not disclosed. The models are part of significant updates for the 2025 model year, which Rivian considers a second-generation design.

In addition to aesthetic upgrades, the R1T and R1S California Dune Editions offer enhanced off-road capabilities, including a Soft Sand drive mode that improves traction on loose surfaces. Features such as recovery boards, dark-finished crossbars, and a powered tonneau cover for the R1T are also included.

The Rivian R1 platform, known for its robust off-road capabilities, sets a new standard for electric vehicles in the adventure market. According to Rivian, the EPA-estimated range of these models is 329 miles on a single charge.

Despite their premium pricing, Rivian’s California Dune Editions appeal to consumers looking for high-performance electric vehicles that don’t compromise on luxury or capability. “With the added off-road features, these vehicles are perfect for adventure enthusiasts who demand both power and style,” Calhoun added.
