In a huge surprise that has fans buzzing, Robert Downey Jr. is making his comeback to the Marvel universe. He’s set to take on the role of Doctor Doom, one of the most iconic villains, in the next two Avengers movies!

Fans learned that Downey will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ scheduled for release in May 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in May 2027. Kevin Feige confirmed that the Russo brothers will be at the helm, directing these highly anticipated films.

Downey skyrocketed to fame after he starred in ‘Iron Man‘ back in 2008, which kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He became a household name and was even earning around $50 million per movie! After his character Tony Stark, or Iron Man, met his end in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ in 2019, fans wondered if we would ever see Downey in the Marvel world again.

During the big reveal, Downey showed off a new mask as he was introduced in a dramatic way, surrounded by men wearing Doctor Doom-like masks. The crowd went wild as he stepped forward to take the spotlight. Downey couldn’t hide his excitement and said, “New mask, same task.”

Joe Russo praised Downey’s talent, stating that Doctor Doom is one of the most complex and entertaining characters out there, and that only the “greatest actor in the world” could do justice to the role.

Fans were on the edge of their seats throughout the event. Just moments before Downey’s reveal, the Russo brothers talked about their past work on Marvel films, reminiscing about their emotional journey with the franchise.

Stephen McFeely, a co-writer for the Russo brothers’ Marvel films, will also be a part of these new projects. The ‘Secret Wars’ storyline is a big deal, stemming from pivotal comics that many fans adore. In this tale, an all-powerful being sends heroes and villains to a battle world, which promises to be an epic adventure.

This announcement might mark a fresh start for Marvel as they recently needed to rework plans for their next Avengers film due to some changes in the cast. With the buzz surrounding the latest ‘Deadpool‘ movie, excitement for the Marvel franchise is hitting new heights.

The Russo brothers are no strangers to success. They directed previous hits like ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which at one point held the title of the highest-grossing movie ever. They’ve also directed films like ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’ and ‘Infinity War,’ earning love from the fans.

The Avengers series is a cornerstone of the Marvel Studios legacy. They amazed audiences when they brought together iconic characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor for a massive team-up in 2012.

Robert Downey Jr. is celebrating a remarkable career highlight too, having won an Oscar earlier this year for his role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer‘ and recently signing on for HBO’s ‘The Sympathizer.’
