LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Robert Eggers‘ highly anticipated gothic horror film, starring Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp, premiered on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms this week, joining a slate of major new releases across streaming services. The film, a reimagining of F.W. Murnau‘s classic vampire tale, is set in 1830s Germany and follows a newlywed couple ensnared by the sinister Count Orlok.

Eggers, known for his meticulous attention to historical detail and atmospheric storytelling, delivers what critics are calling his most ambitious project yet. “Skarsgård’s Orlok is towering and hairy, swathed in furs, with a long mustache and a barbaric aspect,” wrote one reviewer. “His voice, slow and booming, rattles the theater with Gothic intensity.”

Alongside Eggers’ film, Paul Schrader‘s new drama starring Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi also debuted on VOD. The film, which explores the life of ailing filmmaker Leonard Fife, has been praised for its introspective narrative and strong performances. Gere, playing the older Fife, reflects on his past as a draft dodger and his tumultuous love affairs, while Elordi portrays his younger self.

Streaming platforms are equally bustling with new releases. Netflix added “Saturday Night,” a biographical comedy about the inaugural season of “Saturday Night Live,” featuring an ensemble cast including Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels and Dylan O'Brien as Dan Aykroyd. Hulu introduced “City of Dreams,” a drama inspired by the true story of a Mexican boy sold into a sweatshop, and “Sleep,” a Korean horror mystery about a couple grappling with sleepwalking-induced terror.

Paramount Plus premiered Ridley Scott‘s long-awaited sequel to “Gladiator,” starring Paul Mescal as a Numidian warrior seeking revenge in ancient Rome. Meanwhile, Peacock released “The Wild Robot,” an animated sci-fi adventure praised for its emotional depth and stunning visuals. “The animation style is so evocative and distinct that I want to touch it and cry,” noted one critic.

For horror enthusiasts, Mubi US added “The Girl with the Needle,” a post-WWI drama about a pregnant factory worker entangled in a sinister adoption scheme. And for fans of action-comedy, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is now available for rent, featuring Keanu Reeves as the voice of a new character, Shadow the Hedgehog.

With such a diverse array of new releases, this week offers something for every viewer, from gothic horror to heartfelt animation and everything in between.
