Robert Kirkman Reflects on Tyreese’s Untimely Death in The Walking Dead

ATLANTA, Ga. — In a candid admission, Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, expressed regret over the death of fan-favorite character Tyreese, portrayed by Chad Coleman, during a recent interview. Tyreese was introduced in season 3 of the series but met his demise early in season 5, a decision that has haunted both Kirkman and fans of the show.
“I wish I was still writing Tyreese,” Kirkman said at the 2022 Comic-Con, acknowledging the character’s profound impact on viewers. “That’s a character I really enjoyed. You know, I wish I was still writing Tyreese on the show. But, it didn’t keep him alive.”
Tyreese’s fate was foreshadowed early in the series, as established characters often faced sudden and brutal deaths, leaving many viewers on edge. Tyreese was killed off in the midseason premiere titled “What Happened and What’s Going On,” which caught fans off guard, especially since the character had survived a significant conflict involving the Governor.
“It was a random manner too,” explained Kirkman, reflecting on the shocking nature of the character’s end. “He was sneak-attacked by a common walker, which would usually be an easy handle for him, but it teaches a valuable lesson — anyone can die at any moment in this universe.”
Chad Coleman, who portrayed Tyreese, understood the risks of being a character in a show known for its high mortality rate. When asked about his time on the series, Coleman shared, “I’m such a seasoned vet at this, I’m never not in a place of ‘It’s gonna come one day.’ The thing I always carry with me is that when you’re on a show like this, all bets are off.”
He continued to comment on the storyline’s unpredictability, stating, “Tyreese was the most popular character on the show. I dare you to kill Daryl or kill Rick. Really turn them on their heads.” Despite the light-hearted challenge, it highlighted the constant tension that surrounded the show’s character lineup.
In the comic series, Tyreese’s death occurred in a dramatically different scenario where he served as Rick Grimes’ right-hand man until his beheading by the Governor. Many fans initially hoped that the show would diverge from this tragic turn of events. However, with Kirkman and Scott Gimple serving as producers, the creative vision ultimately remained perilously close to the source material.
As viewers reflect on Tyreese’s fate, Kirkman’s admission serves as a harsh reminder of The Walking Dead’s unpredictable world, where survival is never guaranteed, and beloved characters can disappear without notice.
Tyreese’s storyline resonates with fans, demonstrating how vulnerability can exist even within the strongest characters, showing that even during peaceful moments, danger lurks close by.
The Walking Dead remains a prominent topic amongst fans and new viewers alike, sparking discussions as the series continues to expand its universe with new spin-offs and storylines.
