Rockstar Delays Grand Theft Auto VI Release to 2026

NEW YORK, NY — Rockstar Games announced on May 2, 2025, that it will delay the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026. The game was originally scheduled for release in fall 2025.
In a message posted on social media, the development team expressed the need for additional time to meet the high standards set by fans. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team,” the statement read.
Rockstar emphasized its commitment to quality, stating, “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” The team also thanked fans for their support and patience.
The announcement follows the game’s reveal in December 2023, which generated a wave of anticipation. GTA VI promises to return to Vice City and feature the franchise’s first female protagonist, Lucia, alongside story elements inspired by Bonnie and Clyde.
While this delay comes as disappointing news to fans, it may open up opportunities for other game developers to schedule releases later this year without the competition from GTA VI. The delay also precedes parent company Take-Two‘s financial results briefing, set for May 15, where further details may be shared.
As fans await the new release date, they can anticipate more information from Rockstar in the coming months. The company’s current title, Grand Theft Auto V, continues to perform well, maintaining popularity 11 years after its launch.
