Rolling Stones Win Grammy Amid Controversy Over Age and Legacy

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Rolling Stones were awarded Best Rock Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards for their latest LP, Hackney Diamonds, sparking controversy among some music fans who believe their storied legacy overshadowed the competition. The prestigious award ceremony took place earlier this month, where the iconic rock band was recognized for their first album in 20 years, amidst nominees including Fontaines D.C., Idles, and Jack White.
Producer Andrew Watt, who played a major role in the creation of Hackney Diamonds, defended the band’s victory in an interview with Rolling Stone’s Music Now podcast. He stressed the impressive nature of the Stones’ achievement, considering they are both in their 80s. “They are 82 and 83 years old,” Watt remarked. “Tell me another band ever in history that has made a latter-day album that good in their 80s, with that level of songwriting, that level of performance?”
Watt had accepted the award on behalf of the band and conveyed gratitude from lead singer Mick Jagger, who expressed appreciation to the Academy for the recognition. “For a little boy that grew up playing guitar, it was one of the most amazing experiences to be around those musicians,” Watt relayed.
Hackney Diamonds is a significant return for the Rolling Stones, featuring original material for the first time since 2005. The album received critical acclaim, with NME describing it as “an absolute barnstormer,” reinforcing the band’s ability to create compelling music even after decades at the forefront of rock.
In light of their Grammy win, some critics have suggested the Stones’ age and legendary status may have played a pivotal role in their selection over younger nominees. However, in response to skepticism regarding their award, Watt reiterated the intrinsic value of the album’s content. He highlighted that the quality of the songwriting should stand on its own merit, independent of the band’s historical reputation.
While the band celebrated this recent accolade, it was reported that they have opted out of touring later this year despite earlier plans for a multi-million-pound show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Sources indicate that logistical complications due to venue availability and existing commitments contributed to the decision. The remaining members, including Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood, were reportedly presented with various options for 2025 tour dates.
The sessions for Hackney Diamonds reportedly yielded a wealth of additional material, raising the possibility of future releases. Watt hinted at this prospect, stating, “I can’t tell you if [another album’s] gonna happen or not. It’s up to them, but it would be great… Why not finish the material, you know?”
As conversations about the Stones’ legacy and future continue, their recent success at the Grammys proves their enduring influence in the music industry. With no indication of slowing down, the band remains a testament to the vibrant spirit of rock and roll.
