Nfl Rookie Running Backs 2025 Season

HENDERSON, Nev. — The 2025 NFL season is shaping up to be remarkable for rookie running backs. After five weeks, these players have accumulated a total of 2,542 rushing yards, making it the 10th most for any rookie class since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

The increase in performance is notable, with rookie backs posting a combined 737 rushing yards in Week 4, marking the highest for any rookie class during September. Historically, this year’s rookies have claimed 18.1% of all rushing yards, ranking fourth for any class in NFL history.

This year’s draft was particularly fruitful, as 25 running backs were selected, including four in the top 40. Players like Ashton Jeanty, who leads all rookies in rushing, are proving their worth right out of college. Jeanty has faced challenges but has shined in crucial moments, with 264 yards coming in the last two games.

Chip Kelly, the Raiders‘ offensive coordinator, defended his playcalling amidst criticism that the team should engage more in rushing strategies. He explained that while the team was balanced in the first half of games, the second half often shifts the focus to the pass. Kelly noted, “I mean, that’s what our game plan is every game,” highlighting the need for a successful run game to ease pressure off the quarterback.

Other rookie backs are also making their mark. For instance, running back Judkins for the Browns has shown the ability to break tackles and make big plays, achieving a high number of first downs. Despite challenges, Judkins has averaged 4.8 yards per attempt.

The impact of these rookie backs can’t be understated as they continue to adapt and perform in the league. If they maintain their trajectory, they might change the dynamic of running back roles in the NFL.
