Rookie Tyler Kolek Impresses Knicks Coach Tom Thibodeau at Training Camp
As the New York Knicks begin their training camp in Tarrytown, New York, rookie point guard Tyler Kolek is quickly capturing the attention of head coach Tom Thibodeau. Known for his gritty playing style and strong work ethic, the 23-year-old is already showcasing the qualities that align with Thibodeau’s expectations for his players.
“Obviously, we drafted him [with the 34th pick]; there’s a lot of things we liked about him, so we’re anxious to see him in training camp, and we’ll see where it goes from there,” Thibodeau mentioned on Monday in response to a question from NJ Advance Media. He further emphasized, “The first step for a rookie coming in is to learn how to be a pro, and he’s already exhibited great qualities. He’s in the gym all the time, working hard, coming in multiple times a day, so he’ll give himself the best shot possible and he’s already adding value to the team.”
Kolek signed his rookie contract with the Knicks on July 5, securing $6.6 million in guaranteed money over the duration of the contract, as reported by Ian Begley of SNY. Despite the Knicks’ depth at the point guard position, with captain Jalen Brunson as the team’s pivotal leader followed by Miles McBride and Cameron Payne, Kolek remains determined to make an impact. “Yeah, I’m just trying to come in and do whatever [coach Tom Thibodeau] asks me to do,” Kolek stated earlier this summer. “Just keep my head down, do what he asks me to do. I’m a worker… That’s my calling card. I’m going to be in the gym, I’m going to get better. Really whatever the team needs, what the coach needs, that’s what I’m going to do.”
During his final collegiate season at Marquette, Kolek made a significant impact by averaging 15.3 points and leading Division 1 with 7.7 assists, shooting 50% from the field and 39% from three-point range. His confident attitude was on display when Marquette was predicted to finish ninth in the Big East prior to the 2022-23 season. “F– ’em,” Kolek famously declared, dismissing the standings predictions. This self-assuredness was validated as he steered Marquette to a Big East championship, culminating in a 65-51 victory over Xavier, earning him the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament.
In an incident that highlighted his resilience, Kolek continued to play effectively after suffering a cut near his eye during a game against Providence on February 28. Though blood streamed down his face, he swiftly sank a catch-and-shoot three-pointer, ending that game with 12 points and 6 assists in a decisive 91-69 win.
Tyler Kolek’s performances have not only intrigued his coach but also impressed observers such as former NBA guard and ESPN analyst Tim Legler. “He is incredible the way that he sees the floor and how quickly he delivers the basketball,” Legler remarked while providing analysis. “He stands out; he is going to become quickly a crowd favorite in New York, the way that he plays, the energy, the motor, but most importantly just how well he delivers the basketball all over the floor.”
