The Royal Mint has unveiled a special commemorative coin in honor of the late pop icon George Michael as part of its Music Legends series. The coin features Michael’s iconic look, including his trademark aviator sunglasses and earring, inspired by his ‘Faith‘ era. Designed by Sandra Deiana, the coin captures Michael’s charismatic expression.

George Michael, known for his solo hits like ‘Careless Whisper‘ and ‘Freedom!’, rose to fame as part of the duo Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley in the 1980s. His untimely passing on Christmas Day in 2016 left a void in the music industry, but his legacy continues to inspire millions of fans globally.

The official approval for the coin came from George Michael’s estate, expressing deep gratitude for the tribute. Also, Royal Mint’s director Rebecca Morgan highlighted Michael’s influence on music and style, making him a global superstar cherished by many.

Notably, ‘Last Christmas,’ the iconic holiday tune by Wham!, claimed the UK No. 1 spot in December 2023, after nearly four decades since its release. The feat marked a record-breaking journey to the top, showcasing Michael and Ridgeley’s enduring impact on music.
