Russia Set to Open First Embassy in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Russia plans to open its first embassy in the Dominican Republic, as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called the Caribbean nation a “promising partner” during his visit on Wednesday. This trip marks Lavrov’s initial journey to the island since diplomatic relations were established 80 years ago.
Lavrov met privately with Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez to discuss strengthening commercial and economic ties. He noted, “There are mutual opportunities,” although he did not give specific details about the embassy’s opening.
The ministers also addressed the ongoing political, security, and humanitarian crisis in Haiti, which affects the Dominican Republic as they share the island of Hispaniola. Since October, over 180,000 people have been deported from the Dominican Republic due to the situation in Haiti.
Álvarez highlighted the need for coordinated international action, advocating for more effective support from the multinational force aimed at addressing gang violence in Haiti. “We hope the United Nations will take a central and active role in logistics and financing to ensure effectiveness,” he said.
Lavrov arrived in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, after attending a BRICS meeting in Brazil. He expressed interest in enhancing ties across various sectors, including political, economic, tourism, cultural, and humanitarian, during his discussions.
The Russian delegation included Ambassador-designate Alexei Viktorovich Seredin and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. Local reports indicate Lavrov may meet with President Luis Abinader, although this remains unconfirmed.
Lavrov’s upcoming meeting with Abinader and the anticipated embassy opening in Santo Domingo in June 2025 highlight the growing diplomatic engagement between Russia and the Dominican Republic.
