Saab Lands Major SEK 700 Million Contract for Combat Vehicle 90 System

ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK, Sweden — Saab has secured a significant contract valued at approximately SEK 700 million ($63 million) from BAE Systems Hägglunds to supply its Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) for the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90). This order emphasizes the ongoing demand for advanced military capabilities among global armed forces, enhancing the CV90’s operational effectiveness.
The CV90 is a modern tracked armored vehicle designed to provide a combination of firepower, protection, and mobility. With a modular design, the UTAAS system is tailored specifically for the CV90, enabling it to engage both aerial and ground targets efficiently. Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Business Area Surveillance at Saab, stated, “UTAAS was specifically developed for the Combat Vehicle 90, which remains a valuable asset for armed forces around the world. As demand for this vehicle increases, Saab has made significant investments to expand its production capacity to meet these needs.”
BAE Systems Hägglunds, headquartered in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, is renowned for developing the CV90, one of the most utilized infantry fighting vehicles globally. The latest order highlights the strong partnership between the two companies, aiming to address the increased need for advanced military technology. Bergholm noted, “Combat Vehicle 90 is an effective and appreciated combat vehicle which is now in high demand by different armed forces worldwide.”
The UTAAS system is designed with a range of advanced features, including a thermal imager, laser rangefinder, and fire-control computer. Its integration into the CV90 aims to enhance the vehicle’s precision and responsiveness in combat scenarios. Furthermore, the system’s modular structure allows for easy upgrades and adaptability, catering to various combat situations.
The Combat Vehicle 90 is equipped with an array of weapon systems, which can include automatic cannons of varying calibers and advanced defense technologies, such as an Active Protection System (APS). This versatility not only broadens the vehicle’s operational capabilities but also ensures the safety of its crew, which can range from three operators to eight soldiers.
In terms of mobility, the CV90 is built for performance, with a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour and an operational range of 350 kilometers. It weighs between 35,000 and 37,000 kilograms, allowing it to traverse various terrains while maintaining considerable firepower and agility. Additional features include a 360-degree surveillance system, enhancing situational awareness on the battlefield.
