Sam Harris Cuts Ties with Elon Musk Over Misinformation Concerns
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Philosopher and podcast host Sam Harris revealed in a recent podcast episode that he has ended his friendship with tech billionaire Elon Musk, citing Musk’s engagement with right-wing figures and online misinformation as key reasons. The revelation came during a conversation with comedian Bill Maher, where Harris expressed deep concerns about Musk’s behavior on social media.
Harris detailed how Musk has amplified conspiracy theories and misinformation, particularly referencing the 2016 Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which falsely accused Hillary Clinton of running a pedophile ring. “People who gave us that are in very good standing with Elon,” Harris said. “He would talk to them on Twitter Spaces, give them the mic, and boost them.”
Musk responded to Harris’s comments by calling him “mentally ill” and using a clown emoji in a tweet. Harris explained that Musk often reacts to out-of-context clips without verifying the full context. “He does not care if he’s defaming someone in public who used to be a friend,” Harris said. “I will email him and say, ‘Elon, you are being gamed by the right-wing trolls who gave us Pizzagate.’ And he will tell me to go f**k myself.”
Harris also criticized Musk’s social media habits, suggesting that the billionaire is addicted to Twitter and often tweets impulsively. “He’s snorting ketamine and tweeting at all hours of the day and night,” Harris claimed. Musk previously dismissed Harris’s critiques, calling him an “utter idiot” and “subtarded.”
The fallout between the two public figures has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing concern over Musk’s apparent endorsement of misinformation. Harris’s comments have shed light on the growing divide between Musk and some of his former allies, raising questions about the impact of his online behavior on his personal and professional relationships.
