San Francisco Bay Ferry Expands and Electrifies Service with New Vision
San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Board of Directors has approved a new 2050 service vision, aiming to enhance, expand, and electrify regional transit for the upcoming decades.
Jim Wunderman, Chair of the agency’s Board of Directors, expressed enthusiasm for the new project, highlighting the heightened interest in expanding the ferry network.
The agency currently operates in Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco, South San Francisco, and Vallejo, and plans to expand its services to at least four new destinations.

The agency also received over $117 million for its electrification program called the Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) initiative, with a focus on incorporating zero-emission ferries in the near future.
According to the REEF program, the agency is on track to award shipyard contracts for its first five zero-emission electric vessels later this year.
San Francisco Bay Ferry is currently known as operating the cleanest ferry system in the country, with a 17-vessel fleet powered by renewable diesel, and thirteen vessels meeting the strictest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards.
