Saoirse Ronan The Outrun Movie Stills

Saoirse Ronan‘s latest film “The Outrun” has generated substantial Oscar buzz following a series of enthusiastic early reviews. The film, directed by Nora Fingscheidt and adapted from Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir, chronicles the journey of a woman named Rona, who returns to the Orkney Islands in Scotland after completing a rehab program for alcoholism, in search of sobriety.

Critics have lavished praise on the film, particularly spotlighting Ronan’s performance. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian, in a four-star review, highlighted Ronan’s “unselfconsciously fierce and focused presence,” complimenting her on effectively portraying both “out-of-control-drunk acting” and “precarious sobriety.” Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent also awarded the film four stars, emphasizing Ronan’s ability to embody the film’s core and exceed the audience’s expectations of a woman in turmoil.

Katherine McLaughlin, in her review on The Skinny, commended Fingscheidt’s skillful balance of humor and detail, noting the depiction of the Alcoholics Anonymous community on the Orkney Islands as particularly poignant. Time Out Magazine articulated hopes that “The Outrun” might finally secure Ronan her first Oscar, describing her performance as “astonishing” for its blend of fragility and determination.

The film, which hits UK cinemas from September 27, was shot on the Orkney Islands two summers ago and is based on Liptrot’s exploration of themes like alcoholism, mental health, and healing through nature.

Beyond its critical acclaim, the movie’s setting in the rugged Orkney Islands provides a striking backdrop, adding to its cinematic appeal. Orkney, with its dramatic landscapes and rich history, has recently become a focal point due to the film’s release, drawing attention to its cultural and natural beauty.
