Sarah Mitton Advances To Shot Put Final

Sarah Mitton had a fantastic day at the Paris Olympics, easily securing her spot in the final of the shot put competition. The Canadian athlete delivered a solid throw of 19.77 meters right off the bat, which was more than enough to surpass the qualifying standard of 19.15 meters.

Mitton’s impressive throw led the qualification round, leaving her in the top spot, with Néo-Zélandaise Maddison-Lee Wesche coming in second at 19.25 meters. The 27-year-old from Nouvelle-Écosse is aiming for her first Olympic medal after finishing 28th in Tokyo back in 2021.

In other events, Canadian canoeists Sophia Jensen and Katie Vincent also had good news. They both made it through to the semi-finals of the women’s single kayak 200 meters. Jensen, from Chelsea, clocked in a time of 46.80 seconds to win her heat, while Vincent, from Mississauga, finished second in her race with a time of 47.22 seconds.

Jensen expressed her nerves before the race but was relieved once it began, saying she felt ready to compete. Both athletes advance directly to the semi-finals set for Saturday.

In contrast, the Canadian team of Courtney Stott, Natalie Davison, Riley Melanson, and Toshka Besharah-Hrebacka finished fourth in their kayak 500-meter semi-final, missing out on the finals.

In wrestling, Hannah Fay Taylor faced a tough match and lost 6-1 to Japan’s Tsugumi Sakurai in the women’s 57 kg category. Similarly, Alexander Robert Moore lost his match in the 86 kg category, being outscored 12-2 by Bulgarian Magomed Ramazanov.

Lastly, in cycling, Canadian Dylan Bibic wrapped up his omnium event in 19th place. He managed to collect some points, but not enough to make a significant impact.
