Saskatchewan Roughriders Vs Calgary Stampeders 2024

CALGARY — Trevor Harris played a pivotal role in leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a triumphant 37-29 victory against the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night. Harris contributed with both a rushing touchdown and a touchdown pass to Kian Schaffer-Baker, helping to halt the Roughriders’ seven-game winless streak.

Shea Patterson, the team’s backup quarterback, also impressed by running for two touchdowns during the game. This win improved the Roughriders’ record to 6-7-1, maintaining their position in the race for CFL playoffs. Brett Lauther, the team’s kicker, added to the scoreboard with three field goals.

Notably, newcomer Ryquell Armstead had an outstanding debut, rushing for 207 yards on 25 carries, showcasing his prowess in Saskatchewan’s offensive lineup.

For the Calgary Stampeders, who now stand at 4-9-1, Clark Barnes and Jalen Philpot managed to catch touchdown passes from quarterback Jake Maier. Tommy Stevens and Dedrick Mills contributed with rushing touchdowns as well. Though Rene Paredes succeeded with a field goal, the Stampeders were unable to avoid extending their streak to 0-5-1 in their last six games.

The game opened with a burst of energy from the Stampeders as Tommy Stevens scored a 69-yard touchdown at 1:38 of the first quarter. However, Paredes missed the conversion, leaving Calgary with a 6-0 lead.

Saskatchewan quickly responded with an eight-play, 63-yard drive, which was crowned by Patterson’s one-yard touchdown scramble. Brett Lauther then contributed with a 33-yard field goal before Paredes hit a 41-yarder to close the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Harris led the Roughriders down to Calgary’s two-yard line, paving the way for Patterson’s second touchdown following a robust eight-play, 99-yard drive. Harris then ran for his own one-yard score shortly before halftime, widening Saskatchewan’s lead to 24-9.

Despite Calgary’s attempts to close the gap, including an eight-yard touchdown catch by Clark Barnes at 4:15 of the third quarter, it was Schaffer-Baker’s 25-yard touchdown reception that bolstered the Roughriders’ lead. Jalen Philpot’s touchdown for Calgary at the start of the fourth quarter gave the Stampeders hope, but Brett Lauther’s 32-yard field goal further extended Saskatchewan’s lead.

Calgary attempted a rally with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Dedrick Mills but failed the subsequent two-point conversion attempt, effectively sealing their fate.

The Stampeders faced a setback when Tyler Richardson was penalized for contacting Saskatchewan’s punter, Adam Korsak, preventing them from regaining possession. Lauther then finalized the score with a 40-yard field goal.

In the closing minutes, former Stampeder Jameer Thurman intercepted Maier’s pass, confirming the Roughriders’ victory.
