Scarlett Johansson Directing Eleanor The Great Film

NEW YORK, NY — Scarlett Johansson is excited to share her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great,” which she describes as “a little gem.” The film, inspired by iconic independent works from the mid-80s to mid-2000s, stars June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Last year, the acclaimed actress achieved a lifelong dream by stepping behind the camera for the first time since her 2009 short film, “These Vagabond Shoes.” In an interview with InStyle, Johansson expressed her enthusiasm for the filmmaking process, saying, “It’s so exciting to be 40 and learn a new thing. Now I know how to make a movie like this. I know how to finish it.”

Johansson’s excitement for the film comes not just from its narrative but also from the learning experience it provided her. “I didn’t know how to do sound mixing and coloring and editing before. And now I know how to do it,” she noted.

The script, penned by Tony Kamen, follows Squibb’s character, a 90-year-old woman who relocates to New York City from Florida after losing her best friend. The story explores her unexpected friendship with a 19-year-old student, highlighting themes of age and connection.

Alongside Squibb and Ejiofor, the film features Jessica Hecht and Erin Kellyman. Although the film does not have a set release date, anticipation continues to build as Johansson takes on this new role.

“Eleanor the Great” promises to be a heartfelt exploration of human relationships, reminiscent of classic films such as “Moonstruck” and “Crossing Delancey,” which inspired Johansson throughout the creative process.
