Scout Motors Revives Classic Brand with Electric SUV and Pickup
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Scout Motors is reviving the iconic Scout brand with the introduction of two new electric vehicles: the Scout Traveler SUV and the Scout Terra pickup truck. The company aims to blend the rugged, adventurous spirit of the original Scout models with modern, sustainable technology.
The original Scout 80 pickup truck, introduced by International Harvester in 1960, was a pioneer in the all-purpose vehicle market. Competing with Jeep and inspiring the Ford Bronco, the Scout line saw various models and upgrades throughout the 1960s and 1970s. However, production ceased in 1980. In 2022, Scout Motors emerged with a vision to bring the brand back to life, focusing on electric vehicles that honor the legacy of the original Scouts.
The Scout Traveler SUV is designed for both daily commutes and off-road adventures. With a 350-mile range on its pure electric model and an optional gas-powered range extender that boosts the range to 500 miles, the Traveler is built for versatility. The SUV can accommodate up to six passengers and offers ample cargo space, making it ideal for families and adventurers alike. “The Traveler SUV is for the daily driver who, come Saturday, isn’t afraid to head off-course,” the company stated. “Offering front and rear locking differentials, 4-wheel drive, and a durable body-on-frame platform, you’ll blaze your own trail, however rough it may be.”
The Scout Terra pickup truck follows a similar ethos, with sustainability at its core. Like the Traveler, the Terra offers both a fully electric option and a range extender for additional mileage. Both models are expected to begin production in 2027, with plans to market them as 2028 models. However, the timeline is subject to change based on current projections.
Scout Motors emphasizes that while the new models are electric and designed for modern lifestyles, they retain the bold, rugged, and resilient traits that made the original Scouts iconic. “Just like those who drive them,” the company said, highlighting the enduring appeal of the Scout brand.
