Scranton Fire Department Mourns Loss of Veteran Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins

SCRANTON, Pa. — The community of Lackawanna County is mourning the death of Lieutenant Kelly Hopkins of the Scranton Fire Department, who passed away Sunday morning after a long battle with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He was 63 years old.
Lieutenant Hopkins served more than 40 years with the department, dedicating his life to the safety and well-being of the community. Family members reported that he died surrounded by his children and family at his home, where he had been receiving care for his illness.
In September, a group of Hopkins’ closest friends gathered at Montage Mountain to support him during his fight against cancer, reflecting the strong bonds he formed throughout his career. His dedication to the fire service and his community has left a lasting impact on many.
“He was more than just a firefighter; he was a mentor, a friend, and a leader,” said colleague and friend Mike O’Malley. “He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.”
As news of his passing spread, members of the community and first responders expressed their condolences, sharing stories and memories of Hopkins’ contributions to public service.
In addition to his role as a fire lieutenant, Hopkins was well-known for his involvement in community outreach programs aimed at fire prevention and safety education.
The Scranton Fire Department announced on social media, “We honor his legacy and are grateful for his years of service. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
