Season 2 of ‘Shrinking’ Launches with a Focus on Forgiveness
“Shrinking” Season 2 has officially premiered, bringing new dimensions to the story of therapist Jimmy, played by Jason Segel. The narrative now delves into themes of forgiveness, contrasting with the previous season’s exploration of grief. Central to this season’s plot is Jimmy’s confrontation with the drunk driver involved in the accident that killed his wife, Tia.
The role of the drunk driver is portrayed by Brett Goldstein, who is also one of the creators of the series. The season features an array of guest stars who bring additional complexity to the story.
Meanwhile, a cast member of “Shrinking” expressed concerns about returning for the second season. The actress, who plays therapist Gaby, admitted to feeling “stressed” about her return after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. She shared with Deadline the pressure she felt, fearing her success from the first season might only have been “a fluke.”
Reflecting on the time of her Emmy nomination, she commented, “The day of the Emmy nom, we went on strike at midnight that night, so it was kind of interesting to be so excited and to be able to post about it and then go on strike…it was dark but you know, I was picketing.” The strike period gave her time to reflect and prepare for her return to the show.
The character development in “Shrinking” continues this season, particularly for Gaby and Jimmy, who were involved in a messy dynamic in the first season. According to the actress, building this dynamic with Jason Segel was “really fun” due to their existing chemistry. She noted that their characters were always intended to have a complicated relationship.
Season 2 introduces new love interests and dynamics—something the actress is eager for fans to experience. She highlighted one particular relationship, describing it as “two peas in a pod” and “really sweet.”
The season also showcases Dr. Paul Rhoades, played by an Oscar nominee, as a “surrogate father figure” for both Gaby and Jimmy, contributing some of the “most phenomenal acting” this season. Viewers can anticipate emotional moments as the season progresses toward the finale.
The actress reminisced on memorable moments from the first season, such as a carpool karaoke scene to Sugar Ray‘s “Every Morning,” and expressed her disappointment about the brevity of a musical moment in the Season 2 premiere.
