Selma Blair Returns to Boxing Amid MS Battle, Trains with Freddie Roach

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Actress Selma Blair is embracing a new challenge as she trains in boxing under the guidance of renowned trainer Freddie Roach. The 52-year-old Blair, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, has been working hard at Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club, where she has spent several sessions refining her skills
Blair’s journey into boxing, which began in February 2023, marked a significant milestone in her quest for physical and emotional well-being. “It is great,” she shared during her training. “Obviously, I couldn’t be more novice, but I take it really seriously and I really want to be a good fighter.” Roach, who has an extensive background in boxing and has trained legends like Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, has been a source of inspiration for Blair as she navigates her health challenges.
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis four years ago, Blair has been open about her experiences and the impact the disease has had on her life. In 2021, she documented her journey in the film “Introducing, Selma Blair.” With newfound motivation from her training, she aims to build stamina and confidence as she returns to Hollywood. “I am building stamina and because I have some real-time being relapse-free, I am feeling more confident to be back on set,” she explained.
Blair credits Roach not only for his boxing expertise but also for his resilience in overcoming personal health challenges. “Knowing that he is such a fighter and has done really well with himself, neurologically, just staying in his presence and staying in his strength…to even get to play in this as who I am and get to feel like I really want to do this,” she said. The actress expressed her desire to surprise herself and others through her boxing journey.
Motivation also stems from her relationship with her son Arthur, whom she shares with ex-partner Jason Bleick. “He’s so tough,” she remarked about Arthur. “Seeing how strong he is, how good he is at things, it was inspiring. Like, I used to be like that. I want to take this seriously.”
As she continues her training, Blair remains focused on health and well-being, stating, “I want to be in good shape, good emotionally, redo some balance and learn how to use my arms in tandem with the rest of me that’s getting stronger.” Her dedication is evident as she aims to enhance her endurance and quality of life.
As for her experience in the ring, Blair reflected on the transformative power of training. “I am just trying to come every day. This is just the beginning,” she said, confident that her work with Roach is a significant step in her ongoing journey.
Blair concluded with a message of resilience, asserting, “I feel confident that I’m not gonna fall apart if I push myself. And that’s just confidence.” With each session, she is determined to defy the odds and emerge stronger, not only as a fighter but as an advocate for those facing similar challenges.
