Sen. Bernie Sanders Pushes for Comprehensive Dental Care Reform in the U.S.
Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent advocate for universal healthcare coverage, has set his sights on expanding dental care to all Americans through the Comprehensive Dental Care Reform Act of 2024. The bill, presented before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, aims to enhance dental coverage under Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration.
In a recent interview with USA TODAY, Sanders shed light on the dire state of dental care in the United States. The Senator emphasized the exorbitant costs of dental services, the shortage of dentists, particularly in underserved areas, and the alarming impact on vulnerable populations.
Sanders highlighted statistics revealing that approximately 40% of American children experience tooth decay by the time they enter Kindergarten. Additionally, nearly one-fifth of seniors in the U.S. have lost all their natural teeth, with many unable to afford dentures, creating obstacles in securing employment.
Despite the availability of dental insurance, Sanders expressed concerns about the adequacy of coverage for complex procedures like implants and root canals. He also pointed out the high costs associated with dental care, drawing parallels to the broader issues within the American healthcare system.
Comparing the attention given to medical care under the Affordable Care Act, Sanders criticized the healthcare system’s profit-driven nature, stressing the need for comprehensive reform to prioritize quality care over financial gains. He highlighted his proposed Comprehensive Dental Care Reform Act of 2024 as a step towards extending dental coverage to more Americans through Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration.
While discussing the prospects of the legislation, Sanders noted support from major veteran organizations like the American Legion and VFW for expanding dental care through the Veterans Administration. He also highlighted the overwhelming public demand for Medicare to include dental, hearing, and vision coverage, indicating a significant need for broader healthcare accessibility across the country.
