Senator Calls for Termination of DOJ Official for Perjury, AG Urged to Act
Republican Senator Tom Cotton has called for the termination of Kristen Clarke, the DOJ’s Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, citing her perjury during confirmation. The Senator led a group urging AG Merrick Garland to act promptly.
Alongside senators Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, Josh Hawley, and others, Cotton detailed Clarke’s perjury. Specifically, during her confirmation, she denied any arrests for violent crimes, though later admitting to a 2006 knife attack.
In their letter to Attorney General Garland, the Senators highlighted the gravity of lying to Congress under oath and the subsequent lack of integrity in adherence to the rule of law crucial for public trust.
The incident involving Clarke’s perjury has sparked a call for immediate action, with the Senators stressing the importance of accountability in such senior positions within the Department of Justice.
This development is significant as it underscores the importance of honesty and transparency in the processes surrounding high-ranking government officials like Clarke. The issue now rests with the DOJ regarding the response and potential actions following these revelations.
