REDMOND, Wash. — On May 12, 2025, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a new card for Magic: The Gathering featuring Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. The announcement comes as fans eagerly await the release of the Magic: The Gathering — Final Fantasy crossover set, launching in stores on June 13.

The card, titled Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier // Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel, showcases two sides of the iconic character. The front displays Sephiroth in his classic attire, while the reverse reveals his transformed State, Safer Sephiroth. Tetsuya Nomura, the creative director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at Square Enix, designed the artwork and shared insights about it on social media.

Nomura explained that he designed the card’s art to align vertically. “If you manage to get two of the same card and line them up, you’ll see how the original illustration looked,” he said. However, he hinted that fans might notice differences in the depiction of Safer Sephiroth. “There is also a reason that the design of Safer Sephiroth is different from the original game, but I unfortunately can’t share more about that,” he added.

This change has sparked speculation regarding Safer Sephiroth’s role in the upcoming installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. While fans await further details, the card’s unique illustration suggests a new interpretation of the beloved character.

The Final Fantasy card set will be available in stores starting June 13, with prerelease events scheduled for June 6. As excitement builds among fans, many are left wondering how this new design will impact future Final Fantasy games.
