Sergio Garcia Secures Spot at 2024 U.S. Open Amidst Last-Minute Drama

Sergio Garcia’s U.S. Open streak will continue after all. Garcia’s attempt to play in the 2024 national championship appeared to come up short last month after the Spaniard lost in a sudden-death playoff for one of the 11 spots in the USGA’s Dallas qualifier.

However, the USGA announced its final six spots to round out this week’s field in Pinehurst on Monday and Garcia, as a first alternate, received entry into the competition.

While Adam Scott’s consecutive major streak received most of the attention heading into the U.S. Open (a record that will move to 92 straight majors, as Scott also received late admission), Garcia’s run is notable in itself. The 2024 U.S. Open will mark Garcia’s 25th straight tournament appearance, which ties him for 10th on the all-time list.

Garcia’s had mixed success at the U.S. Open, boasting five top-10 finishes in his previous 24 starts, although he hasn’t finished inside the top 15 in his last seven appearances. His best U.S. Open finish came at Pinehurst in 2005, where he came in a tie for third at 285 to winner Michael Campbell’s 280.

Garcia, 44, has 36 professional wins, highlighted by his 2017 Masters title. He is sixth in LIV Golf’s individual season-long standings. Garcia’s entry gives the Saudi-backed circuit 13 players in this week’s field.

Along with Garcia and Scott, other players who qualified on Monday for the U.S. Open include Robert MacIntyre (who got the nod thanks to finishing inside the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 60), Brendan Valdes, Otto Black, and Maxwell Moldovan.
