Shayne Ward Responds to Criticism of Overconfidence on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’
Shayne Ward, known for his triumph on the music stage with ‘The X Factor,’ is now facing a different kind of audience as he competes on ‘Strictly Come Dancing.’ Following his debut performance, the singer confronted criticism labeling him as “overconfident.” Ward addressed these comments with sincerity and transparency, aiming to set the record straight.
During the second week of performances, Ward, alongside dance partner Nancy Xu, delivered a tango to “The Door” by Teddy Swims. Despite facing scrutiny, Ward remained resilient. “After the show last Saturday, I received some negative comments on social media saying I was over-confident. Some of them did get to me, but I’m only human; I was scared, I was terrified,” said Ward during his VT prior to the performance.
The backlash prompted show judge Anton Du Beke to offer insightful advice. During the Saturday night episode, he urged, “I want you to listen to this, I want you to concentrate. I want you to evolve yourself into the dance, it’s about the dance.” Emphasizing commitment, he added, “Right now, I want you to be in the dance… you can be a real powerhouse in this competition.” Fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood echoed Du Beke’s sentiments, affirming Ward’s potential as “the one to watch.”
Scores for Ward’s tango reflected his dedication, earning him a respectable 31 points. This improvement signals Ward’s growing confidence and ability to adapt. Despite social media’s critical eye, Ward addressed the comments directly. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he stated, “Not cocky or overconfident… I’m nervous! I just gotta work hard and listen to my wonderful teacher [Nancy].”
A significant moment during the week’s events included Ward sharing a warm embrace with Xu, evidencing the supportive relationship they’ve cultivated, which may be key to his journey in the competition. As the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ series progresses, Ward’s approach to criticism and his response through performance will likely continue to be focal points of discussion.
‘Strictly Come Dancing’s’ Week 2 results show airs tonight at 7:15 PM on BBC One, where audiences will discover which couples face the dance-off following the combined judges’ scores and viewer votes.
