Sheffield Wednesday Claims Narrow Victory Against West Bromwich Albion
In an intense encounter at Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield Wednesday secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the Sky Bet Championship. The match, which took place on a Saturday afternoon, marked Albion‘s first league defeat of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday established a commanding two-goal lead by half-time. The early advantage came as a result of a ninth-minute own goal by Darnell Furlong, followed by a header from Josh Windass. West Bromwich Albion, referred to as the Baggies, rallied in the second half with goals from Josh Maja and substitute Alex Mowatt, leveling the score to 2-2.
However, the Owls managed to clinch victory with a late goal from Anthony Musaba, who found the net from close range four minutes before the full-time whistle. This disappointing outcome leaves the Baggies looking to regain momentum in their upcoming fixture against Middlesbrough.
Carlos Corberán, the manager of West Bromwich Albion, made a strategic change by replacing Alex Mowatt with Ousmane Diakite for the latter’s debut start. Unfortunately for the visitors, the first half saw them conceding early, as Furlong inadvertently turned Marvin Johnson‘s cross into his own goal. Despite several attempts, including a missed opportunity by Karlan Grant and a header off-target by Semi Ajayi, Albion couldn’t cut the deficit before the break.
In the second half, Corberán introduced Mowatt, along with Mikey Johnston and Grady Diangana, bringing a fresh dynamic to the team’s approach. The adjustment paid off as Josh Maja converted a pass from Tom Fellows, marking his seventh goal of the 2024/25 season. Mowatt then equalized with a well-executed volley, bouncing the ball past James Beadle in goal.
Nevertheless, Sheffield Wednesday sealed the deal with a late strike by Musaba, leaving the Baggies’ defense unable to respond in the final minutes. The match concluded with the following line-up for West Bromwich Albion: Palmer; Furlong, Bartley, Ajayi (replaced by Frabotta in the 82nd minute), Heggem; Diakite (substituted by Mowatt at halftime), Racic (replaced by Diangana in the 60th minute); Fellows (replaced by Wallace in the 75th minute), Swift, Grant (substituted by Johnston in the 60th minute); Maja, with substitutes including Wildsmith, Holgate, Molumby, and Dobbin.
