Shilo Sanders Eyes Second Chance with 49ers After Buccaneers Release
TAMPA BAY, Fla. — Shilo Sanders is searching for a second chance in the NFL after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just before the 2025 season. Despite showing promise and good conduct off the field, he struggled to make an impression during training camp, leading to his dismissal.
Sanders’ release followed a preseason incident where he was ejected for throwing a punch at Buffalo Bills tight end Zach Davidson. This moment was viewed as a significant factor in the Buccaneers’ decision, although they appreciated his respectful demeanor while in the organization.
Despite his departure, the 24-year-old now has a new opportunity with the San Francisco 49ers, who hosted him for a workout this week as they look to bolster their secondary amid ongoing injuries. The 49ers, currently undefeated with a 3-0 record, are exploring several options to enhance their depth.
Shilo Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, aims to follow in his father’s footsteps which include accolades such as Defensive Player of the Year and a Super Bowl title with the 49ers in 1994. While no contract has been signed, Sanders remains on San Francisco’s radar, and a successful workout could lead to a more permanent role.
“I feel like this is just part of my story to grow,” Shilo said after his release. “My time with the Buccaneers was great, and I am grateful for all the support. I just want a chance to show what I can do.”
If he signs with San Francisco, Shilo could face his former team, the Buccaneers, when they meet in Week 6, adding a layer of intrigue to his journey.
