Singer Melanie, Known for ‘Brand New Key’ and Woodstock Performance, Dies at 76
Singer Melanie, best known for her songs ‘Brand New Key‘ and ‘Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),’ has passed away at the age of 76, according to her publicity firm Glass Onyon PR. The cause of death has not been released. Melanie had recently been working on her 32nd album, ‘Second Hand Smoke,’ which featured cover songs and was set to be released by Cleopatra Records.
Melanie’s children, Leilah, Jeordie, and Beau Jarred, confirmed the sad news on Facebook and expressed their gratitude for the love and support they have received. They described Melanie as a talented, strong, and passionate woman, and asked fans to light a candle in her honor at 10 p.m. CT.
Melanie rose to fame in the early 1970s with her hit songs ‘Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)’ and ‘Brand New Key.’ The former reached No. 6 on the Hot 100 and was a collaboration with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. In the UK, she scored another top 10 hit with a cover of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Ruby Tuesday‘.
Despite her success, Melanie felt that she didn’t always receive the recognition she deserved in the male-dominated folk-rock scene. She believed that her image as a smiley, cherubic woman hindered her perceived social significance. She was, however, highly regarded by younger artists, including Miley Cyrus and Jarvis Cocker.
Melanie’s musical journey began in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village, and she later gained attention after performing at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969. Inspired by her experience at the festival, she penned her breakout hit, ‘Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).’ Her husband and manager, Peter Schekeryk, played a significant role in her career until his death in 2010.
In recent years, Melanie had been collaborating with her children on recordings and performances. She had also recorded cover versions of songs by artists such as Morrissey, Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead for her upcoming album, ‘Second Hand Smoke.’
The singer’s three children expressed their plans to organize a Celebration of Life in her honor, welcoming all those who wish to pay their respects. Details of the event will be announced soon.
