SMU Dominates FSU Amidst Weather Woes
The SMU Mustangs secured a decisive victory over the Florida State University Seminoles, with a final score of 42-16, in their first ACC game of the season. The game took place at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, where the Mustangs showcased their offensive prowess while FSU continued to struggle.
Kevin Jennings, SMU’s quarterback, completed 16 of 23 passes, accumulating 254 yards and three touchdowns. His performance was complemented by the impressive rushing game of Brashard Smith, who contributed 129 yards on the ground. The Mustangs remained in control throughout the game, capitalizing on FSU’s turnovers.
FSU’s quarterback, DJ Uiagalelei, battling a dislocated finger, had a challenging night with three interceptions. He completed 12 of 30 passes for 222 yards, scoring two touchdowns. His performance also included a pick-six interception by Kobe Wilson, marking a pivotal moment that firmly tilted the balance in SMU’s favor.
Brock Glenn replaced Uiagalelei in the fourth quarter, marking Glenn’s first appearance since the previous season. Running back Lawrance Toafili led FSU with 67 rushing yards on 15 carries, whilst Ja’Khi Douglas added 61 receiving yards over two receptions.
The Seminoles were dealt another setback with an injury to their starting guard, Keiondre Jones, replaced by Andres Estes. Richie Leonard IV, another key guard, was also absent. Despite these challenges, FSU managed brief moments of success, such as a 20-yard touchdown pass from Uiagalelei to tight end Landon Thomas, closing the gap momentarily in the third quarter.
SMU’s success was also augmented by strategic plays resulting in touchdowns, including a 42-yard flea-flicker pass from Jennings to Jordan Hudson. The Mustangs’ defense stood resilient, forcing multiple turnovers and converting them into points.
The game occurred amidst adverse weather conditions, as Hurricane Helene approached Florida’s Big Bend region. Despite the impending weather threat, the game proceeded as planned, with SMU donning blue jerseys and FSU in white uniforms for their clash in Dallas.
