Snoop Dogg Biopic Casts Actor Daviss in Lead Role

LOS ANGELES, CA — A new biopic about rap legend Snoop Dogg is in the works, with actor Daviss cast in the lead role.
The film, directed by Brewer, will follow the journey of Calvin Broadus Jr., known as Snoop Dogg, as he rises to fame in the hip-hop world. Brewer is revising a script originally written by Joe Robert Cole.
Producers for the project include Snoop Dogg himself, Brian Grazer, and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. This marks the first film produced under Death Row Pictures’ collaborative agreement with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.
Daviss, who gained fame for his role as Pope Heyward on Netflix‘s adventure series Outer Banks, is taking on this significant role shortly after news of the film’s production was announced. The 25-year-old actor has also appeared in the Netflix film Do Revenge.
Snoop Dogg, a 17-time Grammy nominee, made his debut in music with the album Doggystyle released in 1993. The album featured popular tracks like “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice,” and was produced by Dr. Dre.
The biopic comes at a time when Hollywood is increasingly focused on music biopics, following the successes of films like Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love and Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet, which received eight Oscar nominations.
Daviss is managed by Monster Talent, Innovative Artists, and Skrzyniarz & Mallean. The production is being overseen by Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development, Ryan Jones.
With the Snoop Dogg biopic, Universal adds another significant project to its lineup focused on the stories of hip-hop icons, following 8 Mile and Straight Outta Compton.
