Soaking Rain and Minor Flooding Possible This Weekend

BURLINGTON, Vt. — A round of soaking rain is expected to sweep through New England starting Friday, May 9. The rain will continue into the weekend, leaving some areas at risk for minor river flooding.
Forecasters predict widespread rainfall, with most locations seeing between 1 to 2 inches by Saturday night. Localized areas, especially in southern and eastern Vermont, may receive as much as 3 inches. The Champlain Valley is expected to see about 1 to 2 inches, while northern New York will experience lighter amounts.
According to meteorologists, a low-pressure system moving up the New England coast is responsible for the rainfall. Showers will likely linger into Saturday morning, but visibility may improve in the afternoon with potential breaks of sunshine in western regions. Highs on Saturday are expected to hover around 60 degrees.
Meteorologist Tyler Jankoski emphasized the importance of staying weather-aware as conditions could lead to minor flooding in some areas. ‘Rainfall totals will be greatest in southern Vermont,’ he said. ‘It’s crucial for residents to monitor local weather alerts.
As the weekend progresses, conditions are expected to improve. Mother’s Day on Sunday is forecast to be sunny with highs reaching the low 60s. A significant shift in weather patterns is anticipated next week, with temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s, providing a drier and warmer outlook.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for possible flooding while enjoying the sunny Mother’s Day festivities.
