Social Security Checks Distribution Schedule May 2025

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Millions of Americans receiving Social Security will experience a different payment schedule this May due to a unique set of circumstances. For the first time in 2025, beneficiaries will receive two Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks this month.

Approximately 68 million Americans benefit from Social Security each month, including about 90% of individuals aged 65 and older. These funds assist not only retirees but also survivors of deceased workers, disabled individuals, and dependents. The average Social Security payment for retirees is currently over $1,909.

Payment dates depend on the recipient’s birthday. Individuals born between the 1st and the 10th will receive their checks on the second Wednesday of the month — May 14. Those born between the 11th and 20th will get their payments on May 21, while those born between the 21st and 31st are scheduled for May 28.

This month, there are changes for SSI recipients. Payments will be issued on May 1 and May 30. The May 1 check covers May’s benefits, while the May 30 payment is an early distribution for June, due to June 1 landing on a Sunday. Recipients will receive their next SSI payment on July 1.

Furthermore, individuals who receive both SSI and Social Security, or those who filed for Social Security benefits before May 1997, will see their checks a day earlier, on May 2, instead of May 3, which falls on a Saturday.

If recipients do not receive their payments as scheduled, they are encouraged to check with their bank or financial institution first before contacting the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213. The SSA mentions that wait times are typically shorter in the morning and late in the week.

In April, about 3 million beneficiaries received adjusted payments as a result of a new law that eliminated provisions intended to prevent certain individuals from receiving combined benefits. These adjustments are being processed automatically for qualified recipients, although the SSA indicated that some cases require additional time to address.

In recent discussions, Elon Musk highlighted potential issues within the Social Security system, citing rare instances of improper payments. While he aims for prompt and accurate benefits distribution, the SSA reassures that any identified issues are being addressed.

For further information about payment schedules and benefits, individuals can create a free account on the SSA’s website or contact their local office for assistance.
