South Africa’s Brevis Out of ODI Series Against Pakistan Due to Injury

Faisalabad, Pakistan — South African cricketer Dewald Brevis has been ruled out of the team’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan due to a low-grade shoulder muscle strain. The injury occurred during the tour, specifically on Saturday in Lahore.
Brevis, 22, has not yet been replaced in the squad, but he will stay with the team in Pakistan for rehabilitation as they prepare for their trip to India later this month. That tour will include two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is.
Despite his injury, Brevis had participated in all matches during the Pakistan tour, although he struggled with his batting performance. His highest score across six outings in Tests and T20Is was recorded in the second innings at Gaddafi Stadium. In his ODI career, he has scored only 110 runs over six matches, with a personal best of 49.
South African captain Temba Bavuma expressed confidence in Brevis’s skills, stating in an interview, “Brevis can kind of make a bad wicket a good one because that is the talent of the boy.”
Brevis’s injury adds to the challenges facing South Africa’s ODI lineup. The team had already rested several key players, including Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada, while injuries to bowlers Kwena Maphaka and Anrich Nortje have further depleted the squad.
Matthew Breetzke, who made his ODI debut earlier this year, will captain the side. He is expected to depend on veteran Quinton de Kock, who will be playing 50-over format for the first time since his absence.
South Africa previously drew the Test series against Pakistan 1-1, while Pakistan won the T20I series 2-1. The ODI matches will be held in Faisalabad, which last hosted men’s international cricket back in 2008. After this series, South Africa will head to India for their tour, starting with the first Test on November 14.
