South Burnett Regional Council Installs Permanent Flood Warning Signs
South Burnett Regional Council has initiated a project to install permanent flood warning signs in strategic locations across the region to enhance safety measures for motorists.
The rollout of the first fold-down signage has commenced in the northern areas, with plans to extend the installations to central and southern regions by the end of June.
These new signs aim to streamline the roads team’s response during heavy rainfall and reduce the need for frequent loading of advance warning signs onto vehicles.
When fully deployed, the signs will prominently display messages such as ‘Water Over Road’ and ‘Road Closed Ahead Due To Flooding’ to alert drivers of potential hazards.
In a statement, Deputy Mayor Danita Potter, chair of South Burnett Local Disaster Management Group, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in preventing distressing situations like emergency rescues during floods.
The Deputy Mayor also highlighted the unpredictable nature of flash flooding, underscoring that road closures due to rapid inundation may not always be accompanied by warning signs or immediately reflected on the Council’s Disaster Dashboard.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution, adhere to road closures, and prioritize safety on water-affected routes. The overarching advice remains: ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’.
Notably, the funding for this signage project has been a collaborative effort between the Federal and State governments, showcasing a commitment to bolstering community resilience and disaster preparedness.
