SpaceX Unveils $40 Starlink Plan for Smaller Households
Redmond, Washington – SpaceX has launched a new $40-per-month internet plan called Residential 100Mbps, targeting smaller households in select parts of the United States. This plan is significantly cheaper than the existing Residential and Residential Lite options, which cost $120 and $80 per month, respectively.
The Residential 100Mbps plan caps download speeds at 100Mbps, with unlimited data and no restrictions on upload speeds. SpaceX describes the plan as a ‘simpler option for smaller households that don’t require the higher throughput of Residential Lite and/or Residential service.’ According to the company, it is best suited for homes with 2-3 people for everyday internet activities like web browsing, video calls, and HD streaming.
While existing plans offer higher speeds – Residential Lite reaches up to 250Mbps and Residential surpasses 400Mbps – this new offering is aimed at light users. SpaceX acknowledged that the plan might not meet the demands of heavy users or larger households that require bandwidth for 4K streaming or extensive downloads.
Currently, the Residential 100Mbps plan is available in specific areas of the U.S., including parts of Nebraska, Minnesota, and Nevada. Users can check for eligibility through their Starlink accounts, and existing subscribers may have the option to switch if available. However, many addresses tested on Starlink.com have not shown the new plan yet.
This launch comes as SpaceX reported over 2 million active customers in the U.S. in July, and the company aims to expand its reach amidst competitive pricing from other internet services. The new plan’s pricing aligns closely with that of other U.S. ISPs, which typically charge around $80 per month for similar services.
With the introduction of the Residential 100Mbps plan, SpaceX is working to enhance its service offerings as the satellite internet market continues to evolve.
