Spider-Man 4 Rumors Suggest Return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield

Rumors surrounding the upcoming installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man series suggest the potential return of actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Maguire and Garfield, well-known for their earlier portrayals of the web-slinging superhero in separate film series, are reportedly in discussions to reprise their roles in the new film. These speculations follow the success of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘ (2021), where both actors returned alongside current Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

According to entertainment writer Alex Perez from the website The Cosmic Circus, there is “a very strong possibility” that Maguire and Garfield will appear in Spider-Man 4 in extended roles due to the film’s multiversal setting. During a question-and-answer session on the site’s Discord channel, Perez discussed these potential developments. He elaborated, “I’ve heard we might see their iterations again in an expanded role.”

Maguire’s association with the Spider-Man character began with director Sam Raimi‘s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, which launched in 2002. Despite plans for a fourth installment in that series, the idea was ultimately shelved. Garfield starred as Peter Parker in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (2012) and its sequel two years later, but plans for a third film were discarded.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton, celebrated for his work on ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ is rumored to be in discussions to helm the new Spider-Man film. Reports from September 2024 indicated that Cretton is “in early talks” for the role of director but precise details remain under wraps.

In addition to reprising the roles of former Spider-Men, Perez mentioned that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might don the symbiote suit in future films. He suggests that this storyline could unfold “within the next few years,” potentially involving appearances from characters like Tom Hardy’s Venom. This development adds yet another layer to the burgeoning multiverse saga within the MCU.

While these rumors continue to generate excitement among fans, neither Marvel nor the actors themselves have officially confirmed any participation in Spider-Man 4. The introduction of a multiversal narrative, however, leaves the door open for numerous possibilities and fan-favorite character appearances.
