A$ap Rocky In Spike Lee's Film Highest 2 Lowest

NEW YORK, NY — Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee has shared the first look at his upcoming narrative feature film, “Highest 2 Lowest,” which is set to debut this summer. This project marks his return to narrative filmmaking after a five-year hiatus and is expected to make a splash at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film, a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa‘s classic “High and Low,” features Denzel Washington reuniting with Lee for the fifth time. Washington plays a New York record executive, a character reminiscent of the original’s protagonist, a wealthy industrialist caught in a horrifying kidnapping scheme.

In a striking first-look image shared by Lee, rapper and actor A$AP Rocky appears as ‘Yung Felon’ in a prison jumpsuit. This reveal comes shortly after Rocky was acquitted in a semi-automatic firearm case, marking a significant moment in his career. Lee expressed excitement over Rocky’s performance, indicating that he plays a central role in the film.

Alongside Washington and Rocky, the cast includes Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, and Ice Spice. The screenplay has been penned by Alan Fox and Spike Lee, while production is being financed by Apple Original Films and A24.

“Highest 2 Lowest” is derived from Ed McBain’s novel “King’s Ransom,” which tells the gripping story of a wealthy man whose family becomes the target of a ruthless kidnapper. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Lee emphasizes that the film is not a direct remake but a reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s narrative.

Washington praised Lee’s creative vision, stating, “It didn’t feel like 20 years. It felt like we picked up where we left off.” With their previous collaborations including iconic films such as “Malcolm X,” “Mo Better Blues,” and “Inside Man,” this reunion is highly anticipated.

Martin Scorsese, who was given a preview of the film, lauded Denzel’s performance as “magnificent,” evidencing high expectations within the industry for what Lee has crafted this time around.

The film is poised for a theatrical release followed by a streaming debut on Apple TV+, aligning with current industry trends of merging cinematic and streaming platforms. Fans eagerly await not only the film but also the anticipated festival circuit that will showcase Lee’s artistry.
