Springer Makes History with Leadoff Home Run in ALCS Opener

TORONTO, Canada — George Springer hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch from Seattle’s pitcher Luis Castillo during Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday. This significant hit marks Springer’s 21st career postseason home run, moving him past Derek Jeter into sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list.
Springer’s 385-foot drive to right field came on a fastball located at the outside corner, giving Toronto an early lead. He achieved the first postseason leadoff home run in Blue Jays history. With 63 leadoff home runs in regular-season play, he ranks second to Rickey Henderson, who holds the record with 81.
“I was just kind of looking for something to hit,” Springer said. “It wasn’t anything specific.”
In addition to Springer’s achievement, the Blue Jays faced adversity as outfielder Zach Lukes left the game after being struck on the knee by a foul ball. Despite the injury, Lukes managed to draw a 12-pitch walk in the first inning and finish the game but was replaced in the fourth inning. The team later reported that Lukes suffered a bruise but no fracture, and he may return for Game 2.
Lukes had a strong performance in the division series against the New York Yankees, where he batted 4-for-12 with five RBIs, including a key two-run single in Game 4.
Toronto’s performance faced challenges, as the team only recorded two hits in the loss to Seattle during the series opener. The Blue Jays are hopeful that Lukes’ return will bolster the lineup against the Mariners, who have won three of four games in Toronto this season.
<p“Everybody knows, obviously, what we need to do,” Springer added. “If some balls fall, obviously it’s a little bit of a different story.”
