April SSI Payment Arrivals and May Quirks Explained

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their monthly payments according to a specific schedule as outlined by the Social Security Administration (SSA). For April, payments will be disbursed on April 1; however, the month of May introduces some irregularities in the payment schedule.

Traditionally, SSI payments are made on the first of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. This month, April 1 is a Tuesday, marking the regular payment day for SSI recipients. The SSA indicates that approximately one-third of SSI beneficiaries also receive Social Security payments.

For those recipients who qualify for Social Security benefits due to age or retirement, payment schedules vary based on individual birthdates. Specifically, those born between the 1st and 10th of the month receive their benefits on the second Wednesday, while individuals with birthdays from the 11th to the 20th will be paid on the third Wednesday, and those born after the 20th are issued payments on the fourth Wednesday. Recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997 receive payments on the 3rd of the month.

In May, SSI recipients will receive two payments: the standard May payment on May 1 and an early June payment on May 30 due to June 1 landing on a weekend. Consequently, beneficiaries will not receive any SSI payments in June.

Further payment quirks are anticipated later in the year. In August, SSI recipients will receive payments on August 1 for that month and again on August 29 for September, but they will not receive a payment in September. Similar patterns apply to October and November.

SSI is designed to assist those with limited income or resources, including individuals aged 65 or older, the blind, or those with qualifying disabilities. According to SSA guidelines, individuals who qualify for SSI typically have monthly earnings not exceeding $1,500.

If you believe you or someone you know may qualify for SSI benefits, applications can be initiated through the SSA website, at local SSA offices, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) during working hours.

The Social Security Administration is enhancing identity verification processes starting March 31 in response to increasing security needs.
