Stars Unveil ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ at CinemaCon 2025

LAS VEGAS, March 31, 2025 — Stars of the martial arts franchise gathered Monday to unveil ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ at the annual CinemaCon event. The presentation, featuring dancers and percussionists, highlighted the film’s emotional and action-packed sequences, designed to thrill both fans of the original series and new audiences.
Leading the stage was Ralph Macchio, who portrayed Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 original film and its Netflix revival ‘Cobra Kai.’ Joining him was newcomer Meng’er Zhang, who plays Li Fong, a martial arts student mentored by both Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan‘s Mr. Han.
Before revealing exclusive footage, Zhang shared a humorous anecdote about his time with Macchio, joking that Macchio enlisted him for menial tasks, saying, “Ralph, I’ve been doing your chores all week. I thought you were teaching me some kind of Miyagi thing.” Macchio laughed and confirmed it was part of hazing for the new cast member.
Footage shown included a poignant scene where Chan’s Mr. Han pays tribute to the late Mr. Miyagi, expressing his desire for Li to learn Miyagi karate. “I want Li to learn Miyagi karate,” Chan states in the emotional moment. An additional clip presented at CinemaCon showcased a more action-oriented sequence, assuring audiences of thrilling martial arts choreography.
‘Karate Kid: Legends’ is directed by Jonathan Entwistle and is slated for theatrical release on May 30, 2025. This film follows the narrative established by the fifth and final season of ‘Cobra Kai,’ which premiered last month.
The original ‘Karate Kid’ film was released in 1984, portraying Macchio’s character as he learns karate from the wise Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita. Since then, the franchise has expanded to include three sequels, a 2010 remake starring Chan and Jaden Smith, and the widely successful ‘Cobra Kai’ series, revitalizing interest in martial arts narratives.
As part of CinemaCon, which runs from March 31 to April 3, industry professionals are treated to exclusive previews and discussions about upcoming films presented by Cinema United, formerly known as the National Association of Theater Owners.
