Stephen Colbert Slams Trump for Demolition of White House East Wing
NEW YORK, NY — Stephen Colbert criticized President Donald Trump on Tuesday for the demolition of part of the East Wing of the White House. During his monologue on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he jokingly remarked on the unusual nature of Trump’s construction plans just nine months into his term.
Colbert commented on the demolition, which is part of Trump’s $250 million ballroom project, saying, “You think it would be impossible for us to be shocked by Donald Trump. But give the man credit, every so often he takes the time to attach the electrodes to our nipples and then it feels like the first time.”
On Monday, heavy machinery began removing sections from the historic East Wing, built in 1902. Colbert showed a photo of the demolition, calling it “so deeply unsettling,” likening it to the surprise of seeing a teacher in a grocery store.
The late-night host emphasized that Trump had promised the ballroom project would not affect the existing White House structure. “So that was a lie,” he quipped, questioning whether the ballroom would ever come to fruition or if it might end up being something entirely different, like a restaurant.
Colbert also mentioned that the Treasury Department, which is adjacent to the East Wing, had restricted employees from sharing photos of the construction. He remarked, “Not generally something you instruct when you’re proud of what’s going on.”
The White House has faced backlash over the demolition, labeled by critics as “manufactured outrage.” However, the administration pushed back, claiming the ballroom will be a necessary addition to the historic residence.
As the East Wing demolition continues amid protests from preservationist groups, Colbert highlighted the historical significance, stating, “A lot of history being smashed to rubble there.” The National Trust for Historic Preservation has requested that the administration halt the work until a public review process can take place.
Colbert concluded his segment on a light note, comparing Trump’s construction to previous actions that seemed more destructive than beneficial. The East Wing holds memories for many, including Melania Trump, who occupied an office there.
