Stevie Nicks Returns to Saturday Night Live After 41 Years, Recalls Stressful 1983 Performance
Stevie Nicks made a highly anticipated return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) on October 12, 2024, marking her first appearance on the show in 41 years. This visit coincides with SNL’s 50th season celebrations, which have already seen the return of several former cast members and musical guests.
Nicks’ first performance on SNL was on December 10, 1983, where she promoted her second solo album, The Wild Heart, by performing the songs “Stand Back” and “Nightbird.” However, the 1983 performance was not without its challenges. Nicks’ co-writer and duet partner for “Nightbird,” Sandy Stewart, suffered from severe stage fright and was unable to perform. In a last-minute decision, Nicks’ sister-in-law, Lori Perry, stepped in to fill the role, and despite the chaos, the performance was a success.
Nicks reflected on the stressful moment, stating that despite the hiccups, the show was “magical” and significantly boosted her solo career. She expressed her pride in the performance and the impact it had on her career.
During her recent return to SNL, Nicks was accompanied by host Ariana Grande. Nicks performed her new single, “The Lighthouse,” which is her first original song in four years. Co-written with Magnus Birgersson and Vincent Villuis, and co-produced with Dave Cobb and Sheryl Crow, “The Lighthouse” is a call to action following the overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Nicks acknowledged the significance of performing on SNL, noting that it remains one of the most prestigious platforms for artists. She expressed her nervousness but also her excitement about the opportunity to reach a new and broader audience).
