Strava Acquires Runna to Enhance Personalized Running Training

San Francisco, April 17, 2025 — Strava, the leading app for active individuals, announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Runna, a United Kingdom-based company renowned for its personalized running training plans and coaching.
The acquisition merges Strava’s vast fitness community of over 150 million users with Runna’s innovative coaching platform, creating significant value for the users and shareholders of both companies. Michael Martin, CEO of Strava, noted, “Coming off Strava’s accelerated innovation and unprecedented growth last year, it was the right time to look for complementary businesses that could create even greater value for our users. Running is booming worldwide—nearly 1 billion runs were recorded on Strava in 2024. Runna’s mission to give every runner a personalized plan to achieve their goal is a perfect fit.”
Recent data from Strava indicates that running is the fastest-growing sport globally, particularly among Generation Z, who are using it to foster community connections. As a result, the number of participants in races has surged, with 43% of Strava users indicating aspirations to participate in significant events in 2025. This growing interest has amplified the demand for tailored training plans, prompting athletes to seek personalized guidance.
Dom Maskell, co-founder and CEO of Runna, expressed excitement about the acquisition: “We are delighted to become part of Strava as we continue to focus on bringing the world the most customized and personalized training plans available. We have spent many hours together with Strava senior management, and we couldn’t be more excited to be on the same team.”
Ben Parker, another co-founder of Runna, emphasized, “Our passion is to give every runner a training plan and access to amazing coaching, and this investment allows us to make even more improvements to everything we do at Runna, benefiting runners worldwide.”
Martin reiterated his confidence in the Runna team, stating, “I have been deeply impressed with Dom, Ben, and the Runna team. Our plan is to keep the apps separate for the foreseeable future, to invest in growing the Runna team and to further accelerate the development of the Runna app.”
This acquisition reflects Strava’s ongoing strategy to innovate for its extensive user base and represents a substantial investment in Strava’s API developer community, which already includes over 100 training apps connected to its platform. Martin added, “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize and invest in an API developer like Runna. Strava is the community for all active people, regardless of sport, skill level, location, app, or device.”
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, and further details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
