Suits L.A. Aims to Fix Original Series’ Biggest Flaw
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The highly anticipated spinoff of the hit legal drama *Suits*, titled *Suits L.A.*, is set to premiere on NBC on February 23, 2025. The new series aims to address a long-standing criticism of the original show: its reliance on an unrealistic premise.
The original *Suits*, which aired from 2011 to 2019, followed Mike Ross, a brilliant but unlicensed lawyer, and Harvey Specter, a top attorney who hired him despite his lack of credentials. While the show gained a massive following, its central plot device—Mike’s secret—was often criticized as implausible. *Suits L.A.*, however, will feature a cast of legitimate lawyers, eliminating the need for such contrivances.
“The original *Suits* was a dual lead show with Harvey and Mike, and this is a single lead with an ensemble,” said showrunner Aaron Korsch. The spinoff focuses on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor turned defense attorney, played by Stephen Amell (*Heels*). Ted co-founded Black Lane Law, a firm specializing in criminal and entertainment law, with Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt, *The Walking Dead*).
The series will explore Ted’s struggles as a leader and his relationships with his colleagues, including rival protégés Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis) and Rick Dodson (Bryan Greenberg). “Ted doesn’t think that there’s anything wrong with their relationship at all—I think Stuart might disagree,” Korsch teased, hinting at tension within the firm.
Fans of the original series will also see familiar faces. Gabriel Macht will reprise his role as Harvey Specter in a three-episode arc, while Wendell Pierce may return as Robert Zane. The show’s Los Angeles setting opens the door for celebrity cameos, with Denzel Washington granting permission for his likeness to be used. “Denzel, open invitation [to cameo], you heard it here first,” Amell joked.
*Suits L.A.* arrives amid a resurgence of interest in the original series, which became a streaming phenomenon after its addition to Netflix in 2023. The spinoff’s creators hope to retain the legal drama and character dynamics that made *Suits* a success while addressing its most glaring flaw. “This way, the *Suits* franchise can finally do a different version without removing what worked best,” Korsch said.
The series will air on NBC and stream on Peacock, with future seasons already in the works thanks to substantial tax incentives for filming in Los Angeles. Despite a brief production pause due to wildfires, the release date remains unchanged.
