Surrey Cricket Foundation Sees Record Participation Numbers in 2023
The Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF) celebrates a successful year in 2023 as record-breaking numbers of men, women, boys, and girls participate in various cricket activities across Surrey and south London. With almost 4.5% more participants than the previous year, the Foundation saw nearly 48,700 individuals engage in different cricket programs and competitions.
One notable highlight of the year was the significant growth of women and girls’ cricket. The Foundation’s All Stars and Dynamos Cricket initiatives, designed to introduce cricket to 5-8-year-olds and 8-11-year-olds respectively, saw a remarkable increase of 22% in girls’ participation compared to 2022. The number of women and girls’ players, teams, coaches, and matches also experienced steady growth in the county.
Among the success stories is Weybridge Vandals CC, a club supported by the SCF. They witnessed impressive progress in their women and girls’ section, with the achievement of fielding their first-ever girls-only XI. Graham Hills, the club’s secretary, expressed their satisfaction with the development, acknowledging that they still have room to grow but have made significant strides in turning their vision into reality.
As the Chair of Trustees at SCF, Carol Potter emphasized the Foundation’s leading position in women and girls’ cricket in the country. She lauded the notable increase in the number of players, teams, and matches successfully played, highlighting Surrey’s dedication to the growth of the sport for women and girls.
The SCF’s efforts to expand the game of cricket in other aspects also yielded positive results. The Foundation delivered nearly 15,000 competitive fixtures through different programs and competitions, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing talent and providing playing opportunities for juniors and club cricketers. Additionally, the Foundation’s work extended to older individuals, further promoting inclusivity and accessibility in the sport.
Chris Coleman, the Director of Cricket Participation at SCF, praised the charity’s accomplishments over the year, particularly their success in junior cricket and women and girls’ cricket. He recognized Surrey as one of the leading counties in the country and expressed the organization’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all participants, regardless of their background.
Steve Elworthy, the Chief Executive Officer at Surrey Cricket, commended the Foundation’s vital role in promoting the game at the grassroots level. He expressed pride in the diligence, care, and passion demonstrated by the Foundation in delivering cricket at clubs and in the community. Elworthy highlighted the Foundation’s contribution to making cricket more accessible, especially in the women and girls’ game.
In 2024, the SCF aims to continue its growth and development of the sport, focusing on both increasing participation and providing avenues for success for all individuals involved. The Foundation’s work stands as a testament to their dedication to driving cricket forward in Surrey and south London.
