Susan Lucci Teaches Michael Strahan Soap Slap Techniques on ‘GMA’

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Soap opera icon Susan Lucci demonstrated her expertise in fake television fights on “Good Morning America” Monday, teaching co-anchor Michael Strahan the art of dramatic on-screen confrontations.
Lucci, who is best known for her role as Erica Kane on the long-running series “All My Children,” has shared her knowledge of soap opera theatrics with Strahan, who previously admitted that he was still recovering from their first lesson earlier this year.
During the segment, Strahan expressed enthusiasm for taking the techniques to the next level. “Can we take it up a notch?” he asked, prompting Lucci to enthusiastically engage him in a mock verbal showdown.
“It’s really important to not just out of nowhere just all of a sudden have a fight,” Lucci explained. “You have to build to that moment where you are really, really ticked off.” The established tension is a critical element in delivering compelling soap opera performances, she noted.
Using a prop for effect, Lucci picked up a glass of water, causing co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos to swiftly vacate the studio set. “You have to have better aim than I just had,” Lucci laughed after a playful splash that lightly wet Strahan.
Strahan acknowledged the importance of precision in these scenes, stating, “I still got wet though!” As Lucci adjusted her technique, she landed another splash from the glass before receiving a pitcher of water, which she humorously poured over Strahan’s head in a grand finale that mirrored classic soap opera dramatics.
Following the skit, Roberts joked, “Can you come by every week, Susan?” highlighting the playful chemistry between the co-hosts.
Lucci is set to join the cast of the Broadway play “My First Ex-Husband,” written by Joy Behar, beginning February 26, adding yet another accomplishment to her illustrious career.
